Former PITCHSHIFTER Singer Talks About His New Band

Former PITCHSHIFTER singer J.S. Clayden has spoken to State of Emergency about his new band DOHENY, in which he is joined by ex-THE CULT touring bassist Billy Morrison (on guitar),among others.

"DOHENY is 100% back to basics," Clayden said of the band's sound. "If we can't play it live then it's not on the record. There are no samples at all. The whole feel of the band is a live rock band. There are no tricks, no smoke, no mirrors. Just five guys playing instruments.”

With regards to accusations from detractors that this could be a step backward fpr the singer, J.S. said, "For me personally, DOHENY is the next step as a musician. PITCHSHIFTER was an awesome time for me, and I will always love it, but it's time for us all to move on. As a musician, DOHENY is way more of a challenge to me both in terms of vocal performance and writing. I have had to push myself to become a better singer to be able to perform and record the DOHENY songs. That has been very interesting for me and very rewarding. DOHENY is much mellower in places than PITCHSHIFTER, but has much more taxing vocal ranges and notes in each song. It's been a lot of fun to write stuff that people can sing along to. When you come from such a heavy background, it's challenging to write some softer tunes. Everything was pretty much on '10' most of the time with PITCHSHIFTER, we were like a machine gun locked on fire. With DOHENY, it's refreshing to have some more mellow moments blended in with the rocking stuff. It's a wider spectrum in that sense." Read more here.
